Stourbridge Automotive Workshop - MOT Test Centre

MOT Test – What’s involved!

As part of UK Government legislation, UK owners of vehicles are required to book their vehicle in for a MOT Test to a UK certified MOT Test provider, like Stourbridge Automotive here in the West Midlands.

Vehicles over three years old, and every subsequent year, are not deemed road worthy without having passed this test, and will not be able to obtain valid insurance, as insurers always require a current MOT certificate, to protect the vehicle.

If you have ever wondered as to what an MOT entails, then here is a useful explanation.

What To Expect!

First, a registered MOT Test Centre will display a blue badge with three interlocking white triangles. This badge indicates that the centre has undergone thorough checks and tests by the regulating body, the DVSA to authorise them as an official MOT test centre.

MOT Test Safety and Compliance

Secondly, when you book your vehicle in for a MOT Test, on the day the certified tester will carry out the following checks to ensure that your vehicle is safe and meets compliance:

  • Body structure for sharp edges that could cause injury
  • Vehicle identification number (VIN)
  • Number plates
  • Lights checked for operation, condition
  • Head lights checked for alignment
  • Horn
  • Check for tell tail devices working correctly
  • Windscreen washer / wipers working correctly
  • Windscreen for condition
  • Seats for security and adjustment
  • Seatbelts for fitment condition & operation
  • Corrosion in specific areas
  • Tow bar for security and electrical operation
  • Fuel system checked for leaks on pipes hoses & seals
  • Exhaust system is complete & secure
  • Warning lights for ABS, Engine management, tyre pressure monitor
  • Doors, boot or tailgate for operation
  • Mirrors
  • Brakes checked for efficiency; brake pipes / hoses, brake pads inspected
  • Steering and suspension checked for condition / operation
  • Visible wiring & battery security
  • Wheels, tyres & valves
  •  All where visible and applicable to the age and type of vehicle being tested, all checks are to a minimum safety standard only.

Understanding the outcome of a Test

Following the checks, if everything is ok, then the vehicle will be issued with a newly dated MOT Test result which clearly states that the vehicle has passed the MOT. *Please note that the certificate is no longer printed as they are available to view online.

If the vehicle doesn’t pass, the certified MOT Tester will issue a failure certificate to notify the owner / driver of any issues. They then have up to 10 working days to correct the problems and re-present the vehicle for a second test.
