During the 20th century, Mercedes-Benz was founded by inventors, Carl Benz, Gottlieb Daimler, and Wilhelm Maybach. All working individually on their own vehicle research engineering projects and spanning over several years. These great inventors came together to create one of the significant globally recognised and longest-standing automotive marques – Mercedes.
Whilst Daimler and Maybach teamed together to devise their early vehicle invention, by using a single cylinder engine which was based on the mechanism of a grandfather clock and built and tested on a bicycle. Alternatively, Carl Benz investigated the process of building a four-stroke engine and rather than trying to fit an engine into an already built carriage, instead a car like structure was built around the engine.
At the “Nice Race Week” in March 1901, the first Mercedes caused lots of excitement. The powerful, yet lightweight vehicle, which had a low centre of gravity, made its debut by standing out from the other cars. With its pioneering design, it also signalled the end of the previous popular carriages.
The launch of the Mercedes-Benz trademark
Following its launch, the first Mercedes automobile was advertised and registered in Germany as a protected trademark. Both the four-pointed and three-pointed star emblems were registered in 1901, yet it was the three-pointed star which was chosen and is still used on Mercedes vehicles today.
During 1926 and following World War One, the two invention companies came together, and Daimler-Benz AG was established. The new Mercedes was born and marketed as a luxury, commercial vehicle. Launching the iconic ‘K model’, the vehicle incorporated passenger seats and a short wheelbase, it was recognised as the fastest touring car in the world.
Throughout the last century and into the noughties, Mercedes-Benz has developed its marque through many vehicle innovations in both mechanical and electronic advancements. Recognised for both quality and safety, the Mercedes-Benz marque is renowned for style, tradition, and innovation.
